First of all, I'll let you know that I'm once again attempting to "give Nascar a try" in 2010 as my friend Derry Prenkert twittered about himself last night.
I found his tweet ironic since I had know idea he was embarking on the same attempt as me this weekend. His tweet stated, "Dear Nascar, I gave you a try today. I wanted to enjoy you, but your lumpy asphalt got in the way. I miss the NFL."
Last year, I lasted all of one race which sounds like that's how long Derry will last this year. I can hardly blame him. I find myself with the same frustrations.
I was excited to sit down and watch the "Daytona 500" yesterday that I had DVR'd in my attempt to "fall in love" with a sport I have never got into before. It wasn't a pleasant surprise to find out that even though I had set the DVR to record 90 minutes longer than what the race was already scheduled for that I still had not set the recorder for long enough to get the whole race recorded.
Although I was glad I was able to fast forward through the 2 hours or so of stoppage due the damaged asphalt. What did they expect when it's been 1970-something since the last time they paved the track?
Anyway, I am learning more about NASCAR, am more resolved than last year to keep watching longer this year and I think this will be the year I get hooked. However, my wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting NASCAR.
I'm trying to figure out now which driver I should root for OR if it shouldn't be a driver at all, but maybe rather a whole team? Input would be appreciated.
Here's where I'm at right now...
If I go with just one driver, I'm down to choosing between these 5 drivers. See the poll at the top left of my blog to vote for the one you think I should give my loyalty to:
(1) Kasey Kahne
(2) Carl Edwards
(3) Kyle Busch
(4) Denny Hamlin
(5) Jamie McMurray
If I choose to root for a team over a driver, I'm down to choosing between these 3 teams:
(1) Joe Gibbs Racing - Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin & Joey Logano
(2) Richard Petty Motorsports - A.J. Allmendinger, Kasey Kahne, Paul Menard & Elliott Sadler
(3) Roush Fenway Racing - Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth & David Ragan

It took me awhile to get into Nascar. But my boys got me hooked. You should come to the Michigan race with us. Being there in person - it is riveting.
Oh, I can't really vote in your poll. Anyone but Kyle Busch will make you happy. But please, do pick Joe Gibbs Racing. He's an amazing Christian.
